Analysing Potiential Bottlenecks on Sharepoint 2010 Integrated Mode with Reporting Services 2008 R2

$

Hi,

I am shortly going to go on site to analyse performance issues on a production system which is based on; -
Sharepoint 2010,
Performance Point 2010,
Integrated with SSRS 2008 R2,
Windows Server 2008 R2 SP 1.

I am attempting to find performance bottlenecks because sometimes the rendering of reports is unacceptably slow within Sharepoint.

So I am looking to find what the root cause of the performance issue is whether it be; -
Sharepoint, Performance Point, SSRS Rendering, SQL Server, Analysis Services, etc.

I understand Performance Monitor could help here but it's not immediately obvious to me which counters to use, particularly for the Sharepoint side.

I'm very familiar with how to use SQL Profiler to trace the speed of SQL and MDX queries.

Is there a white paper or any technical documentation which relates directly to the above?

Since this question is a genuine 50/50 split between SSRS and Sharepoint I've also raised this question on the following forum; -

http://social.msdn.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/sharepointgeneralprevious/thread/9cba4523-a027-43ec-8da5-97661fef88be

Kind Regards,

Kieran.

Branching to different reports based on user ID

$

I have been asked to show one of 3 different reports based on the user ID.

The requirement is that as a user hits the SSRS report we look up who they are and were abouts in the organisation they are.

We have 3 levels of reporting, Everything, Division, Team. Each user will be directed to one of these levels along with some params with which Division or Team data to show.

There's also a fourth option of course which is "Go away you don't have any access!"

No getting the data for a given user I can do. But I don't want to show/hide 3 reports as that's just wasteful. Is there a way of either bouncing to a specific report (like a URL redirect or META refresh) or embedding a specifc report dynamically?

Failing that I could use an ASP page I suppose to do the initial direct/redirect. But that feels a bit clunky, especially as my ASP is several years out of date.

Does anyone have any suggestions as to a possible approach/method?

many thanks

Steve

Show All Data with a Date Range Filter

I have an SSRS Report with a Date Range Filter that works fine when you select two dates and hit View Report. But I would like to make it so all the data shows by default and then you can narrow it down by the date range filter. Is there a way to make all the data display by default with a Date Range Filter?

So basically you run the report and ALL data displays then you can use the Date Range Filter to narrow the data down further.

I've tried everything I can think of and no luck.

Thanks!

Is there any way to easily determine the column width of a data cell?

$

I thought I could export my result set to Excel and change the font size to the same as my report and then Auto-fit and find out the true column widths that way. But Excel isn't very cooperative in the inches arena.

I have to believe that there is some tool out there that helps one figure out the exact column widths of my data column so that it doesn't wrap and create a longer data report line.

Thanks for your review and am hopeful for a reply.

I have the report server(RS) on one machine and the report manager(RM) on another.  Both machines are part of a domain and the services are run by a domain services account.  On the report server machine I can access the report server and it works. I can also navigate to the report manager url and it works as well.  From the report manager machine I can access both the report server and the report manager once I turn of the IE Enhanced Security. The report manager using both localhost and the fqdn. I have created a report in BIDS and published it and can view it in from both the report manager server and report server fine. I can also access the report server from a client computer which is a part of the domain.  The issue is when I try to access the report manager from a client computer it will give me "The request failed with HTTP status 401: Unauthorized."   I am using windows authentication, I have made sure impersonate="true" is in the config file properly. <RSWindowsNTLM /> is the only authentication I have:

<Authentication>
      <AuthenticationTypes>
             <RSWindowsNTLM />
      </AuthenticationTypes>
      <EnableAuthPersistence>true</EnableAuthPersistence>
</Authentication>

The connection to the database is with a special SQL account dedicated to reporting services with ownership to the tables it created and public rights.

I have no idea why I can't access report manager from a client computer, it has to be something simple I am missing?!?  Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

1) ID Number
2) Status (e.g New, Process, Cancel)

From above parameter it able to select or choice to use ID Number or Status as parameter.

Dynamics AX 2009 - SSRS Reports Need to reuse rdl files from SSRS 2005 (VS 2005) in SSRS 2008 (VS 2008)

$

Its all about Dynamics AX 2009 and SSRS reports built and exported from VS 2005

I have rdl and rdl.data files from a Dynamics AX 2009 SQL Server 2005 erp environment

My problem is partially addressed in these threads:
http://social.msdn.microsoft.com/Forums/en/sqlreportingservices/thread/75a46847-806e-49da-96b5-691e31813f6e
http://stackoverflow.com/questions/7875252/is-it-possible-to-import-existing-ssrs-reports-in-visual-studio
http://stackoverflow.com/questions/183953/how-to-get-visual-studio-2008-to-edit-ssrs-2005-report-projects-w-o-installing-s

A similar environment was set by the developers to study the client system with client data with following exceptions
.)Database: SQL Server 2008 R2 SP1 (not 2005)
.)Microsoft SQL Server Reporting Services Version 10.50.1600.1 (guess client has old due to sql serer 2005).
.)Visual Studio 2008 SP1

Now the only thing I want to do is to somehow get that rdl file (or rdlc file when renamed as directed in some threads)  associated to some report project in visual studio 2008 / bids so that i can reuse the layout in rdlc file, associate it to some dataset / model (from AX, so i will need queries availability here) and get my report deployed in AX 2009 AOT.

I select the Dynamics AX Reporting project template in the VS 2008

The problem is, once i rename the rdl to rdlc and open it in VS 2008, it starts giving a very good layout as shown in the image as well.

But all this layout, these fields are useless since the dataset they are binded to is not available. And I find no other means to attach models that I can create in the new report(s)(.moxl file perhaps)

If I do not rename the rdl file, it opens its xml schema as follows:
Not renaming the rdl file to rdlc opens its xml schema
I tried this since I found a conversion thread, i chaged the schema and saved the file, reopened it and same xml which is

useless fo rme i guess

Whats the role of SSDT, this is available only since VS 2010 I think, is that a must for rdl file conversion as i read here: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/data/tools.aspx ?

How can i reuse this 2005 rdl file or renamed rdlc file which is successfully rendering its layout / design in VS 2008,

just need to bind it to AX datasource / query / temp table and i m done

Is it not possible at all ? Or is it just not the way to do, please guide me, I have tons of such rdl files and i want to

reuse their layout.

Thanks,
Maqk

Asynchronously rendering the ssrs report from Winforms C#

Dear All,

There are some heavy reports which need to be optimized for performance. Report takes few parameters such as StartDate, EndDate etc from the parameter screen which is in C# win-form application

I want to render this report asynchronously.

Can anybody guide as to how we can render the report asynchronously either in C# or in SSRS.

Thanks in advance.

ReportViewer not showing Wingding characters properly on Internet Explorer 7

Hi All,

I have a report that uses Wingding characters such as ticks and crosses (character codes 251 and 252).  When running the report inside Visual Studio, the ticks and crosses show up as expected.  The ticks and crosses also show up as expected when viewing the report through a ReportViewer inside a web application in Chrome.  However, when accessing the web application in Internet Explorer 7, the ticks and crosses shows up as the Wingding character 63 (righthand).  Does anyone know how to fix this?

Thanks

I have implemented the security extension in SSRS 2005 for custom authorisation of report. Which is working fine in Windows & SQL Server 2005 but when i migrate this to SSRS 2008 R2 in Windows 2008, i am getting "IIS APPPOOL\ORApplicationUAT" user instead of actual user name who is accessing the application.
